Rachel in our administration team recently enjoyed a familiarisation visit to Slaley Hall Hotel, hosted by the QHotels Collection, and has written about her stay.
The building was originally purchased by Charles Samuel Hunting in the late 1800s, and it was known at the time as Bog Hall Farmer. The original hall, which is built in local stone taken from the Ladycross Quarry, commenced in 1912 and the family took up residence at Slaley Hall in 1914, the first year of the Great War. During the war, the building was used as a hospital and rest place.
It was then bought by Major Jonathan Lee Priestman and Christine Priestman in 1947 and used as an estate for their family and friends. In 1984, Mrs Priestman died, and the estate was put up for sale where two Irish entrepreneur builders bought it. In 1985, plans were put in to construct the hotel bedroom wing, golf, and leisure facilities, changing the use of the existing estate to provide a hotel, from here Slaley Hall Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort was formed.
With 1,000 acres of surrounding woodland to explore, Slaley Hall Hotel lies south of Hexham, perched on the cusp of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Guests can unwind with an expert treatment in the spa, or take a dip in the indoor heated swimming pool. In addition, Slaley Hall offers a great selection of dining options, from Mr. Kennedys Brasserie to The Claret Jug and 19th Bar overlooking the stunning terrace.
Rachel said: I had the most amazing stay at Slaley Hall Hotel. The public spaces are stunning, with modern amenities alongside dramatic Edwardian features. The bedrooms are spacious and the bed was extremely comfortable to sleep in. It is the perfect place to come to relax and unwind, with a spa, swimming pool, lovely woodland walking routes on-site, and delicious food.
The view of Slaley from the terrace, with the vast golf course behind is simply unmatched. After the hotel tour, our group was treated to a pre-dinner drinks reception with canapes on the terrace, followed by a beautifully presented 3-course meal served in Hadrians Brasserie restaurant. The self-service buffet breakfast in the morning had every item I could possibly want, including a full English with French toast, blueberry juice, and cinnamon pastries.
En route home, I called at Hexham town centre to have a look around. The beautiful Abbey dominates the town and there are some lovely shops too. I would highly recommend a stop in Muro Lounge café bar, with its gorgeous interiors, big portion sizes, and table or app service available.
A big thank you to Paula Turton, National Account Director at QHotels for organising and hosting the trip, and to Business Development Exec Maisie Latcham at Slaley Hall for doing the show round and joining us for dinner. It was very nice to meet you both and I hope to work with you again in the future. This 4* property is certainly one that we will consider using at G-Line Holidays and would be ideal for our discerning guests who want a relaxing holiday retreat but dont want to travel too far.
Slaley Hall is located just over 100 miles from our coach depot via the M6, with attractions such as Hexham, Alnwick Castle & Gardens, Bowes Museum, Beamish Museum, Hadrians Wall, and Durham city centre right on its doorstep.
